Introduction

Medical respiratory specialists specialise in the diagnoses, treatment, assessment, and prevention of conditions and diseases related to the respiratory system. The respiratory system relates to the network of organs and tissues that help you breathe, diseases, infections, and allergies all work to limit our respiratory system’s capacity to function properly. Medical specialists who work with the respiratory system are referred to as pulmonologists. Pulmonologists hold a number of responsibilities and oversee the diagnosis and treatment of numerous diseases; these diseases may include:

• cancer

• tuberculosis, or TB (a bacterial lung disease)

• cystic fibrosis (an inherited condition that causes a sticky section that can affect the airways often causing infection)

• interstitial lung disease (scarring of the lung tissue between and supporting the air sacs)

• chronic cough

• sleep disorders relating to breathing, eg obstructive sleep apnoea

• pulmonary vascular disorders (affecting the blood circulation of the lungs)

In reaching their medical conclusions, pulmonologists often use procedures such as spirometry’s, bloodwork, chest X-rays, CT scans, bronchoscopies and sleep studies to diagnose chronic lung disease.

Pulmonologists are specially trained medical practitioners who would hold the appropriate medical credentials, residency experience, and practical experience within their field of specialisation. The specific specialisation and background needed by your pulmonologist will be determined by the matter which requires examination.
