Introduction

The movement of surf life saving, established in the early twentieth century, provides voluntary rescuers across major Australian beaches, and has influenced similar programs across the world. Rescuers are trained to deal with a variety of different issues which may occur on beaches, most importantly, the prevention of drownings.

The authors analysed resuscitation report-forms from the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia for the period 1973-1983. Resuscitation in deep water was shown to be effective, and instruction in these techniques is standard teaching within (now) Surf Life Saving Australia.

A man was injured when a surfboard hit him in the eye while he was standing in the ocean. He claimed the injury was a result of the negligence of the Surf Life Saving Club of the beach.

Till and Others v Sunshine Coast Regional Council [2016] QCAT 530

A man alleged discrimination by the local Surf Life Saving Club and the council on the basis that the location of access points to the patrolled beach were unable to be used by him and his family, due to the presence of dog off leash areas and large steps.
