Introduction

Radiology, often synonymous with medical or diagnostic imaging, employs a variety of imaging techniques used to diagnose medical conditions and in some cases, treat them. The field began in 1895 when German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen discovered x-rays.

Radiology techniques include:

  • X-rays
  • Ultrasound
  • Computed tomography (CT)
  • Positron emission tomography (PET)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

While a radiographer is responsible for capturing the images, the interpretation of those images is performed by a Diagnostic Radiologist. Using their experience, they can identify medical conditions, such as the location of tumours or where clots and blockages have occurred.

In everyday medical practice, radiologists may insert chemo ports, take biopsies of livers, lungs and abdominal areas, drain infections from the body, unblock kidneys, livers and arteries, perform mammograms and ultrasounds for breast cancer detection, give spinal steroid injections, and report on CT, MRI and ultrasound imaging.

Expertise in Action

Radiology expertise is often relevant to personal injury, medical malpractice and negligence litigation involving an allegation that medical intervention and care support did not meet professional standards. Radiology experts have a strong medical background and experience working with various types of diagnostic imaging. Since medical imaging is used for many different medical issues, radiology experts are able to provide a very valuable insight into cases involving oncology, cardiology, neurology, pregnancy, accident and emergency, bullet wounds, and other numerous medical conditions, treatments and care practices.

Radiology experts can also offer opinion on how medical scans were performed and conduct a medical treatment review of the incident in question.
