Introduction

Acrobatics is the display of advanced agility, strength, balance and motor coordination in the service of the performing arts, sports and martial arts. Related to the field of gymnastics, acrobats practise and develop their skills in agility and coordination. There are different types of acrobatics, some dating back to the Minoan civilisation in the second millennium BC. They include: aerial skills (e.g. jumping, highwire, trapeze), cheerleading formations, adventure sports (e.g. slackline), circus, theatre and dance acts, advanced diving variations, and new forms such as parkour.

Due to the very nature of the activity in pushing the human body to its limits, acrobatics carries an inherent risk of injury to its practitioners such as strains and breaks. Instructors need to be experienced, aware of risks and implement the use of precautions when training (e.g., fall mats, nets, girdles, pads and harnesses).
