Introduction
Physiotherapy uses biomechanics, manual therapy, exercise therapy, and electrotherapy to treat physical impairments, and promote physical mobility and function.
The three different types of physiotherapy are:
- Musculoskeletal/orthopaedic – used in the treatment of problems such as sprains, strains, back pain, arthritis, posture problems, and sport or workplace injuries
- Neurological – used in the treatment of disorders such as stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury and multiple sclerosis.
- Cardiothoracic – used in the treatment of asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and other cardio-respiratory disorders.
Each patient’s treatment is designed to suit their specific needs and a physiotherapist may choose from different types of therapies such as:
- Manual therapies – includes joint manipulation and mobilisation, manual resistance training and stretching.
- Exercise programs – includes muscle strengthening, posture re-training, cardiovascular stretching and training.
- Electrotherapy techniques – includes Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), laser therapy, diathermy and ultrasound.
